110 / 365 – ‘Win Win’ – 106 mins
Cinema Challenge #41 / 115
Disheartened attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach, stumbles across a star athlete through some questionable business dealings while trying to support his family. Just as it looks like he will get a double payday, the boy’s mother shows up fresh from rehab and flat broke, threatening to derail everything.
When watching ‘Win Win’ you can’t help but feel it’s best place would be at home as a Channel 5 TV afternoon movie of the week, but this one beefed up for the big screen is very well acted especially by Paul Giamatti who does brilliantly here as the good guy with a few moral dilemmas, and the thing with Giamatti he is good to watch no matter what he’s in.
In short with numerous funny moments, many of them coming from Mike’s best friend Terry (Bobby Cannavale) who is obsessed with his estranged wife, her ongoing affair but finds escape in becoming an assistant coach, writer and director Thomas McCarthy serves up a solid if clichéd at times, family comedy drama that’s worth seeing.
