#48 / 365 – ‘Rango’ – 107 mins
Cinema Challenge #21 / 115
A pet chameleon, Rango (Johnny Depp) falls out of a car in the desert, and earns himself a heroic reputation in the makeshift animal town of Dirt as gunslinger Rango. Dirt’s water-supply is controlled by a turtle mayor (Ned Beatty) and his gang, but Rango rallies the decent folks when it seems the community will be destroyed.
In an age where almost everything animated appears in 3D, Rango refreshingly does not opt for this route. The company who got the gig to produce the effects in this Gore Verbinski (‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’) – Spaghetti Western, was Lucasfilm; Industrial Light & Magic and they have set the bar so high even the great Pixar might be looking over their shoulder trying to match it, because everything on display here, the landscape, characters designs are a perfect visual feast to the eyes.
Visions aside, the movie’s dialogue is also gorgeous to the ear, so rapid-fire, and so endlessly hilarious, with its talented voice cast of: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher as “Beans,” Rango’s love interest, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Timothy Olyphant, Ray Winstone and a certain western legend, who you should recognise.
