and so it begins… ‘1 Man 365 Days 365 Films’ – Day 1

The challenge has started, exciting times ahead! Two films watched today from the IMDB top 250 and two which I haven’t seen before.

#1 – ‘Rope’ (1948) 80 min
IMDB Challenge #1 / 250 – Via LoveFilm

This film was purportedly an early unsuccessful experimental film for Alfred Hitchcock as Brandon Shaw (John Dall) and Phillip Morgan (Farley Granger) try to play out the perfect murder by strangling their Harvard friend, David, and hide his body in a trunk in the middle of their apartment. However their crime is eventually uncovered by their old prep school teacher, Rupert Cadell (James Stewart).

This film for me it is easily up there with ‘Rear Window’ (a personal Hitchcock favourite of mine) and for the life of me cannot understand why it is ranked so lowly on the list and when the brilliant James Stewart enters the fray he always steals the show. 4****

#2 ‘Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter… and Spring’ (2003) – 103 min
IMDB Challenge #2 / 250 – Via LoveFilm

Simply this is a tale about a young Buddhist monk who embarks on a life’s journey of learning, love, desire, murder, anger and peace (bottle all this up and you have got a life coaching manual!) set against an idyllic backdrop of the changing of the four seasons.

At first and probably due to there being virtually no dialogue (this normally isn’t an issue as I have watched many silent films before!) throughout the films entirety I struggled to get into it, but then strangely by the second act it begins to absorb you with it’s simplicity and stunning cinematography.

To be honest I don’t know why I have never watched a World Cinema film before and if it’s the same for you, then I recommend this a good film start with if you are looking to break into the genre. 3***

Ok that’s two films down so only another 348 to go….face is filled with *dreaded fear* lol.

I will do a trip to the Cinema tomorrow to begin the 115 new releases part of the challenge…but first I must employ some kind of Time Management tactic into my viewing schedule, because as I’m finishing typing this first post at 3:07 am this is not a good start and must change! Anyway little *rant* over to myself, night\morning all.
